Description: This presentation provides an overview of community services in the state of Florida to be used as alternatives to State Mental Health Treatment Facilities for our forensic patients. It discusses the services the Department offers and is responsible for, as well as Department goals. This presentation reviews why diversion is a necessary and appropriate option for many individuals and how mental health treatment in the community can help individuals learn daily living and coping skills while remaining close to home and continuing with their everyday responsibilities. We discuss in detail the different placement options, typical referral processes, and typical eligibility criteria. Finally, we look at what’s to come and discuss the recent 2023 statutory changes.

Community Forensics (Judicial) Presentation

Description: This presentation provides an in-depth look at Florida’s Forensic System. It reviews the key players of this system in detail from The Department of Children and Families staff, to our Managing Entities, to our community providers. It reviews important job duties of our community provider forensic specialists, when these individuals will encounter the court, and how they can be used as a resource. This presentation also looks at specific forensic related procedures including forensic step-downs and non-restorability. Finally, this presentation covers the Sequential Intercept Model, a framework for thinking about how and when individuals can be diverted from the criminal justice system by looking at what resources are available in each individual community, the cost savings associated with diversion, as well as an overview of diversionary opportunities to consider.
