Overview

Primary prevention aims to prevent intimate partner violence (IPV) before it occurs by reducing risk factors and strengthening protective measures. In Florida, primary prevention efforts focus on strategic, data-driven planning, and sustainable community-level initiatives based on the best available evidence. The Department’s 41 certified domestic violence centers develop plans annually to implement primary prevention strategies within their communities. These efforts focus on fostering safer environments, engaging key community influencers, and strengthening support systems to reduce IPV. By tailoring programs to local needs, these centers aim to create lasting change and prevent first-time victimization and perpetration. The Office on Domestic Violence (ODV) remains committed to promoting primary prevention statewide by providing technical assistance and supporting best practices for reducing IPV.
