Overview

Primary prevention is any action, strategy or policy that prevents intimate partner violence (IPV) from initially occurring. Primary prevention seeks to reduce the overall likelihood that anyone will become a victim or a perpetrator by creating conditions that make violence less likely to occur. Prevention of IPV focuses on preventing first-time perpetration and first-time victimization.

Primary Prevention in Florida is poised to bring about decreases in intimate partner violence risk factors and increases in intimate partner protective factors by increasing strategic data-driven planning and sustainable use of community and societal level primary prevention activities based on the best available evidence. Currently, primary prevention programs implement and engage in policy efforts aimed at impacting different focus areas such as Create Protective Environments; Engage influential adults and peers; and Strengthen Economic Supports for Families.

In 2018, Florida was awarded a new five-year grant from the CDC called DELTA Impact. The purpose of DELTA (Domestic Violence Prevention Enhancement and Leadership Through Alliances) Impact is to bring about decreases in intimate partner violence risk factors and increases in intimate partner protective factors by increasing strategic data-driven planning and sustainable use of community and societal level primary prevention activities based on the best available evidence. Florida is one of ten states to receive this funding. Each state will implement programs and policy efforts aimed at impacting three focus areas: Create Protective Environments; Engage influential adults and peers; and Strengthen Economic Supports for Families.

ODV is committed to advancing primary prevention principles at the state level. ODV will continue to implement prevention principles, concepts and practices, and provide technical assistance to local projects on primary prevention of intimate partner violence.
